About Us

Who We Are

Winged Delegates began with a fire. In the autumn of 2025, a lithium battery in a tenant’s electric scooter caught fire overnight in a residential building in San Francisco’s Tenderloin. Within minutes, a family lost their home. Watching it happen, we were left with a question we could not let go of: in a neighborhood already carrying so much, what does it take to shift something? During the months of restoration, we saw more than the damage. We saw the people who live on these blocks — not as a social issue to be solved, but as a community full of stories, resilience, and possibility. A story. An image. A moment of light in a place the rest of the city too often passes by. So we made a decision: light up the street. Tell a story. Bring art directly into the everyday life of the neighborhood.

That decision became this contest. We believe in the power of art, not loudly, not all at once, but steadily. The way light works. We believe that bringing young, bright creative minds together around the realities this neighborhood lives with every day can move something. That a cohesive voice, carried through a screen on a Tenderloin sidewalk, can reach people and places that traditional gallery spaces often cannot. Winged Delegates runs two open calls per year for digital artists worldwide. Each contest is anchored in a theme this community already knows — fire, recovery, safety, displacement, home, and care. Selected works are displayed on a street-facing window in the heart of the Tenderloin, not behind a gallery door, but out in the open, for anyone walking by. Foot traffic insights help us schedule selected works during the hours when the street is most alive. We are a small, independent initiative. What we lack in size, we make up for in conviction — and in the network of local artists, educators, curators, and community members who share one belief: that a neighborhood begins to change when it starts to see itself differently. If you make digital art and have something to say, this contest was built for you.
